The conference "Ways to achieve social justice and gender equality in Azerbaijan: Achievements and future prospects", jointly organized by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population and the International Labour Organization (ILO), has begun its work. Representatives of the government, non-governmental organizations, and international organizations are participating in the event.
At the opening of the conference, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Protection of Population Vusal Nasirli highlighted the achievements of the successive social reforms carried out in recent years on the instructions of President Ilham Aliyev, and that ensuring decent work is one of the main priorities of the socio-economic policy carried out in the country.
The Deputy Minister noted that the participation of women in the labour market in Azerbaijan is increasing year by year, and the legislative reforms carried out in recent years to expand their employment opportunities and support their activities in higher-paid areas.
He noted that the new draft law, which includes amendments to more than 150 articles of the Labour Code, also provides for new rights related to the concepts of "employee with family responsibilities", "remote work", as well as maternity and childbirth leave.
Vusal Nasirli brought to attention a number of legislative projects prepared as the next steps to ensure the inadmissibility of discrimination in the workplace. He emphasized that the digitalization of labour relations in recent years has created the basis for a more transparent, flexible and efficient regulation of the labour market. He expressed confidence that the discussions to be held at this conference will contribute to the formation of new initiatives and innovative approaches to more effectively using the potential of women in the labour market.
The event featured speeches by Vladanka Andreeva, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, First Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation, Vice-President of the International Trade Union Confederation Ilyas Aliyev, Executive Director of the Azerbaijan Microfinance Association, Vice-President of the Azerbaijan Entrepreneurs Confederation Jala Hajiyeva, Member of the Milli Majlis, UN High-Level Champion on Climate Change at COP29 Nigar Arpadarai, Vice-President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Ziba Mustafayeva, and others, as well as a video address by Beate Andrees, ILO Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia.
The two-day conference will feature panel discussions on topics such as "Using fair and green transitions for gender equality", "Achieving equal pay for work of equal value", "Achieving gender equality now and in the years to come: The role of the private sector", "Social dialogue and compliance to ensure gender equality", etc.
