As part of the meeting, Julia Braunmiller, Lead Specialist of the World Bank's Women, Business and Law Project, made a presentation on creating jobs for women. The presentation discussed three countries with successful reform experiences regarding women's labour. Azerbaijan was also mentioned among them, and it was noted that the reforms carried out in our country in recent years to increase women's employment opportunities are exemplary.
These reforms were noted as a major progress in the participation of women in the labour market in the country. It was stated that previously existing restrictions on women's employment in many professional fields (railway engineer, bus driver, etc.) have now been eliminated with the relevant legal amendments. As a result, information was provided about the first woman working as a train driver in the railway system as a clear example of the increase in women's opportunities for participation in the labour market.
It should be noted that in recent years, based on the proposals of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population, as well as the "Labour Market" working group of the Commission on Business Environment and International Ratings led by the Ministry, improvements have been made to labour legislation in line with advanced world practice regarding women's labour.
As a positive result of these reforms, in the World Bank's 2024 Women, Business and Law report-rating, Azerbaijan increased its index from 78,8 to 85, moving up 35 places, from 104th to 69th place among 190 countries.
