This time, the Children’s Paralympic Games were held in 8 sports disciplines, more than in previous editions, with 130 young para-athletes competing.
Organised by the National Paralympic Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and in partnership with Azercell Telecom LLC, the next Children’s Paralympic Games were held at the Sumgayit Paralympic Sports Complex of the Social Services Agency under the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Population.
The event was attended by Minister of Youth and Sports Farid Gayibov, Minister of Labour and Social Protection of the Population Anar Aliyev, Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzade, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Protection of the Population and President of the National Paralympic Committee Hidayat Abdullayev, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Protection of the Population and President of the Azerbaijan Deaflympic Committee Anar Bayramov, Rector of the Sports Academy Fuad Hajiyev, two-time Paralympic champion Ilham Zakiyev, and representatives of the sports community.
Speakers highlighted that the national Paralympic movement in Azerbaijan, formed in the 1990s on the initiative and with the blessing of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, has gone through a significant development path. They also spoke about the historic victories achieved by Azerbaijani athletes, including Paralympians, thanks to the special attention and care of President Ilham Aliyev for the development of sports in Azerbaijan.
It was noted that young para-athletes are determined to successfully continue these sporting achievements. The importance of the Children’s Paralympic Games in developing the children’s Paralympic movement in the country and increasing the interest of children with disabilities in sports was especially emphasised.
Afterwards, musical performances were presented by the creative team of the DOST Inclusive Development and Creativity Centre.
A total of 130 young para-athletes took part in the Games, competing in various categories across 8 sports disciplines: para judo, para table tennis, para taekwondo, para swimming, para powerlifting, para badminton, para archery, and boccia. Compared to previous editions, this year’s Games featured a higher number of sports disciplines.
At the end of the event, a winners’ award ceremony was held. Certificates and gifts were also presented to other young para-athletes who participated in the Games.
The main purpose of holding the Children’s Paralympic Games is to engage children with disabilities in sports, develop their athletic skills, and nurture a new generation of para-athletes who will достой represent Azerbaijan in international sports arenas in the future.
