Azerbaijan has won its first-ever Deaflympics medal in the nation’s sports history at the “25th Summer Deaflympics” held in Japan.
The medal was secured by athlete Joshgun Aliyev, who competed in the judo events in the 60 kg weight category.
On the first day of the judo competition, the Azerbaijani deaflympian advanced to the final by defeating Choi Junho from South Korea in the Round of 16, Tonzetic Josip from Croatia in the quarterfinals, and Westerhof Albert Gerhardua Hendrik from the Netherlands in the semifinals.
In the final match, although Joshgun Aliyev was defeated by his Brazilian opponent Dantas Pedro, he made history as the first Azerbaijani athlete to win a silver medal at the Deaflympics.
During the awarding ceremony, the medal was presented by the Vice President of the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf, Yutaka Osugi.
The “25th Summer Deaflympics,” which will continue until November 26 with the participation of more than 3,000 athletes, marks the first time Azerbaijan is represented by 20 athletes in 6 sports disciplines.
The Deaflympics movement promotes the development of sports among individuals with hearing disabilities. The Deaflympic Games are the second oldest international multi-sport event in the world.
